Los Angeles Auto Show 2009 Concept Cars

The Los Angeles Auto Show 2009 is featuring 11 concept cars which either have a space age design, a green theme or both. Concept cars from Audi, BMW, Honda, Lexus, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo offer a glimpse at what the vehicles of tomorrow may look like.

This group of concept cars include:

    • Audi e-tron
    • BMW Vision EfficientDynamics
    • Honda Personal-Neo Urban Transport
    • Lexus LF-Ch Premium Compact Hybrid
    • BMW MINI Coupe
    • BMW MINI Roadster
    • Mitsubishi PX-MiEV
    • Subaru Hybrid Tourer
    • Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid
    • Volkswagen Up! Lite
    • Volvo S60 Concept

In regard to space age design, the Audi e-tron, BMW Vision EfficientDynamics and Honda Personal-Neo Urban Transport blow away their respective competition. And of this group, the Honda Personal-Neo Urban Transport (or P-NUT as they are calling it) has the most futuristic design.

The P-NUT is a small urban vehicle meant to tool around big cities and fit into tight spaces. It has a small internal combustion engine coupled with a hybrid battery pack that makes it a green vehicle.

On the P-NUT, the windshield and sunroof merge into one as the swoop of the overhead design lends itself to this feature. Now, let's face it, next to the space age vehicle, the Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) isn't very sexy.

It looks basically like a Prius. But what is sexy is that unlike many other concept vehicles, this one is expected to make it to market next year. Not only that, the Prius PHEV will compete head-on with the GM Volt PHEV.

While GM is making grandiose claims about the performance of the Volt (which is still a work in progress) setting up extreme expectations, Toyota is downplaying expectations of the Prius PHEV - for now.

One can look forward to next year and the years beyond and see the Toyota concept car of today, being one of the highest selling vehicles in tomorrow's marketplace. And, that's a pretty good concept, now isn't it?

Audi of America's president says the company will build the Audi E-tron all-electric sports-car concept that debuted last month at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show. The two-seater will be at the running-prototype stage within two years, said Johan de Nysschen, and it will be on sale in the U.S. by late 2012.

The Audi E-tron has four electric motors, one in each axle — "a true Quattro," says Audi — and a lithium-ion battery pack positioned behind the car's seats. The car makes 313 horsepower and a shocking 3,319 pound-feet of torque and can reach 60 mph in less than 4.8 seconds. Top speed is 124 mph and driving range is said to be 154 miles.

Audi said at the Frankfurt show that the Audi E-tron "belongs in the major leagues of sports cars." It should offer serious competition to the likes of Fisker and Tesla when it comes out on the U.S. market. No pricing or other details were announced.

Audi 'e-tron' Electric Sportscar Debuting at Frankfurt Motor Show

    audi_e-tron_teaser_image.jpg

As reported earlier today on TheAutoChannel.com Audi will definitely shock the world with an electric vehicle at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. Although the Germans do not wish to provide much information, we got some more news about the EV and this rough sketch of back of the e-tron, as the model is called.

The spokesman of the distributor for Audi in The Netherlands confirmed the rumour, but not that it will be the electric version of the R8. “It will be a true sporty vehicle, with the sport genes of Audi and the efficiency you might expect of our brand,” he said. “It is a study that is called e-tron.” The drawing of the back of the e-tron study shows we can expect a true sports car model that is probably as wide and low as the R8. Also, I am sure the EV will have quattro all wheel drive and also that it will have the Audi Space Frame, since Audi is the leader in the use of aluminium bodies based on the ASF.:,/p>

The e-tron concept car will be introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show on Tuesday, September 15, at 13.00 pm CET (7.00 a.m. EST). The Auto Channel will air the news that very same minute.

    R8 Spider and More
The Dutch spokesman could also confirm the arrival in Frankfurt of the R8 Spider, but again could not provide any details. We can promise you though that you will find all the news about this topless super car here at The Auto Channel on Tuesday, September 15, at 00.01 CET (Monday 18.00 pm EST). Stay tuned!

Three more debuts and a new logo Audi will introduce its new logo in Frankfurt as well as three other new models cars: the S5 Sportback, the A3 1. TFSI and the A4 quattro wit the extremely low emission 3.0-liter TDI clean diesel engine that debuted in the Q7 SUV. With a new DeNOx catalytic converter this engine reduces 90 percent of the NOx –emisions and meets the US Tier 2 emission standard.
